Will my mental health get better on its own?

“Time heals all wounds,” as the saying goes, but is this really true? No, time by itself can’t fix problems. In fact, giving a problem time without making other changes can make things worse. Imagine you’re with a friend at a coffee shop when the fire alarm starts blaring. You start to smell smoke and look over to see large flames flaring out from the kitchen. Your friend tells you, “Just give it some time. The fire will go away on its own.” I bet you’d think “just giving it some time” isn’t such a good idea here. Why not? Because this is a problem that will only get worse if no one intervenes.

Mental health problems can be like this as well. Anxiety, depression, trauma, low self-esteem, and other struggles don’t usually go away on their own. According to an evidence-based theory, problems are “sustained” or “maintained” by patterns of thinking and acting we have learned from past experiences. The good news is that, with practice, these patterns can be changed and we can make a lasting difference in our lives.
